How to organize your garage - Storage systems and a good plan will make you want to leave the garage door open
Like most garage owners, there comes a time when we look at our garage and say "where is my (tool or other item) I know I have one". But as the old saying goes, we can't see the forest... for the trees.
It's time to determine how to organize your garage. Today's garage owners have more options than ever to make-over the one area of the house that is so often neglected and 'left for dead'. With a weekend and a good plan, you can get your garage organized and make it the envy of the neighborhood.
Create a Plan
As with anything, figuring out how to organize your garage should start with a plan. Determine what you have and make a list. Prioritize the list into four categories.
1. Things you need readily available
2. Things you only need a few times a month
3. Seasonal items
4. Things you just need to store and probably won't need but once a year
What you goal should be is to create storage areas to suit these needs. Cabinets and shelves serve priorities 1 and 2. Ceiling mounted hooks and storage lofts serve items 3 and 4. You'll want to be sure that item 3 things are somewhat more accessible than item 4 stuff.
Group common things together so they will be easy to find - items like paint, tools, kids toys, bicycles, lawn & garden tools, etc.. Once you have your list, sectioned into categories and prioritized, you are on you way and how to organize your garage is half way there.
First - Clean Out the Garage - Then Organize
How to organize your garage actions begin with cleaning out the entire garage. Make two areas in the driveway - one to keep and one to throw away. My simple rule is if I haven't seen it in two years or haven't needed it in a year, toss it. Once you know what you're going to put back into the garage, you will want to refer to your plan to see what items will go into which categories.
Now, begin to organize your garage with this plan.
Garage Storage Systems
In order to organize your garage, you'll want to buy and install some garage storage systems. There are literally hundreds of items available to do this. You can get complete storage cabinet systems, shelving, wall storage systems, garage loft storage, lawn tool holders, wall hangers and many other options.
